There are a lot of misconceptions out there about the Versus games. This is understandable, since Capcom has been pretty vague with them. Hopefully, this FAQ will clear some of that up. Please check to make sure that your question isn't in the FAQ before you e-mail me about it.

Notation:

Q. What is the Versus series?
A. The Versus series is a line of fighting games created by Capcom, also famous for creating Street Fighter, Megaman, Resident Evil, and many more titles. Versus pits Capcom's characters against franchises from other companies, such as Marvel and SNK. Currently, Capcom has produced seven Versus games.

Q. What was the first Versus game?
A. The very first game in the Vs. series was X-men vs. Street Fighter. It was released in 1996, and had 16 playable characters, plus Apocalypse as the boss.

Q. What about X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes?
A. Those two games were Capcom's first Marvel fighters, were released before XMvSF, and are not in the Versus series. However, most of the Marvel characters in the Versus series originated with those two games, but not all (see A Little About the Vs. Games for a list of who first appeared where). The characters taken from XM:COTA are Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Juggernaut, Magneto, Spiral, Silver Samurai, Sentinel, Psylocke, Omega Red, Colossus, and Iceman. The characters who came from MSH are Hulk, Shuma-Gorath, Blackheart, Iron Man, Captain America, Thanos, Dr. Doom, and Spiderman. All the other Marvel characters first appeared in a Versus game.

Q. What games are in the Marvel vs. Capcom series?
A. X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. None of these games are connnected in terms of storyline, however.

Q. What game does (insert Capcom character here) come from?
A number of the Capcom characters in MvC 1&2 are very obscure, and in many cases their games were not released in America. Here's a list of all the games the Capcom characters originated in.
-Amingo and Ruby Heart: Marvel vs. Capcom 2
-Anakaris, B.B. Hood, Felicia, Lilith, and Morrigan: Darkstalkers series (aka Nightwarriors, Vampire Savior).
-Captain Commando: Section Z, Captain Commando
-Hayato: Star Gladiator, Plasma Sword
-Jill: Resident Evil series (aka Biohazard) -Jin: Cyberbots, Tech Romancer
-Megaman and Roll: Megaman (original series, not X, Legends, or Battle Network. Those are different Megamen).
-Norimaro: Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
-Servbot and Tron Bonne: Mega Man Legends
-Sonson: Sonson
-Strider Hiryu: Strider, Strider 2
-Everyone Else: Street Fighter series

Q. Who is Shuma-Gorath?
A. Shuma-Gorath is a very obscure villain from the Dr. Strange comics. He has the same powers as Dr. Strange, and does not pop up very often. At the end of his first appearance, he was banished to the Chaos Dimension (and interestingly, Capcom decided to use that for one of his supers). Why Capcom chose him is a complete mystery. In fact, it's surprising that they had even heard of him. But I like him, so I'm not complaining.

Q. How do I play Norimaro?
A. Norimaro was taken out of the American version of MSHvSF. He is playable in the Playstation version using a Gameshark, but that is all.

Q. When is Marvel vs. Capcom 3 coming out/Who is going to be in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, etc.
A. At the moment, there is no Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Sometime after MvC2 was released, Capcom lost the Marvel liscense to Activision, and they can't produce any more new Marvel games. There were rumors of MvC3 being in production before the liscense was lost, but if so then the game was in it's early stages and is now canned. Capcom apparently does have rights to re-release Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which they did for PS2 and X-Box. But that does not mean they can make any new games. If they re-acquire the rights to Marvel properties, or if Marvel makes a new contract with them, who knows? But in the meantime, the game does not and cannot exist.

Q. Why is Capcom vs. SNK so different from Marvel vs. Capcom?
A. MvC and CvS, aside from both being in the Vs. series, are two very different games. Marvel vs. Capcom mainly focuses on flashy graphics, insanely fast gameplay, easy combos, and damaging super moves. Capcom vs. SNK, on the other hand, is much more true to traditional fighting games than MvC. It features complex gameplay, realistic characters, and is generally considered to be more serious.

Q. Why isn't Megaman in Capcom vs. SNK? Or Strider, or Jill, or Cable. Will they be in Capcom vs. SNK 3?
A. Unlike MvC, Capcom has limits on which of it's characters can be in CvS. Basically, a character had to have originated with a fighting game before they were even considered for CvS. This is mainly because CvS represents the rivalry between Capcom and SNK for domination of the fighting genre. Thus, any character who did not originate with fighting or brawling games has virtually no chance of making it into the CvS games. This eliminates Megaman, Strider, Jill, Tron Bonne, and anyone who has not been in a fighter other than Marvel vs. Capcom 1 or 2. The exceptions to this rule are characters like Athena, who originated outside of fighting, but are already firmly established as fighting characters. Further, absolutely NO Marvel characters can be in CvS for a million reasons, the most obvious being liscensing issues. Of the remaining characters who do come from fighting games, there is a slim possibility. However, generally only the most realistic characters will be selected.

These characters from the MvC games have appeared in CvS:
-Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Guile, Chun-Li, Sakura, Cammy, Zangief, M. Bison, Dan, Dhalsim, Morrigan

These characters were in MvC and are likely candidates for being in CvS.
-Charlie, Hayato.

These characters were in MvC and originated with fighting, but are not likely to be in CvS.
Felicia, B.B. Hood, Anakaris, Captain Commando, Ruby Heart, Amingo.

Of the above characters, the Darkstalkers, Captain Commando, and Amingo are extremely unlikely at best, as they don't really fit in the CvS world. Ruby Heart, Hayato, and CapCom would need to have their moves reprogrammed or replaced with less flashy ones in order to fit the CvS mold. Basically, if a character is any more unrealistic than Morrigan (in both design and moves), then they probably won't appear in CvS.

On one final note, there is no indication other than rumors that a Capcom vs. SNK 3 is even going to be released anytime soon, so none of this may matter anyway.

Q. I heard that SNK is making their own version of Capcom vs. SNK, called SNK vs. Capcom. What do you know about this?
A. This is true, although extremely little information is availabe right now. All that is known is that it is being developed by SNK, and will be released in Arcades.
